Child Safety

Child Safety in Window Blinds

At Crescent Blinds, safety is our top priority. That’s why we only provide products and fittings that meet all relevant child safety regulations. Over the years, blind designs have evolved rapidly to enhance both functionality and safety. While regulations primarily focus on child safety, they also protect pets and older adults from potential injuries caused by strangulation.

Traditionally, many blinds were operated using cords with loops—creating a potential hazard. To address this, manufacturers have developed safer alternatives, including:

  • Cord Tensioning Devices – Reduce slack and eliminate the risk of entanglement.
  • Wand Controls – A sturdy wand replaces traditional cords for operation.
  • LiteRise & Smart Cords – Concealed mechanisms inside the headrail for safer operation.
  • Motorisation – The ultimate in child safety, allowing blinds to be controlled with the push of a button

At Crescent Blinds, we’re committed to keeping homes safe while providing stylish and practical window solutions.

Safety Cleats

For certain blinds, such as standard Venetian blinds, it’s sometimes difficult to completely remove cord loops unless a lite rise option is chosen. If it isn’t, then cleats are installed at a height above 1.5m, ensuring cords are safely secured out of reach.

Our Experience

“It can only take 20 seconds to strangle a young child with a cord.”
Make It Safe

“Since 1999, at least 30 child deaths in the UK have been linked to looped blind cords”

Ensuring Safe and Secure Blinds

While older blinds may not legally require updates to meet child safety regulations introduced in 2014, we strongly recommend adding suitable safety devices to minimize risks. Crescent Blinds offers a range of solutions, including cord tensioners and cleats.

Ensuring Safe and Secure Blinds in Your Home

While older blinds may not legally require updates to meet child safety regulations introduced in 2014, we strongly recommend adding suitable safety devices to minimize risks. We offer a range of solutions, including cord tensioners and cleats, to help secure blind cords and enhance safety in your home.
Important Safety Guidelines for Blinds:

  • Keep all cots, children’s beds, and play areas away from blind cords.
  • Avoid placing furniture such as sofas and chairs near blinds, as children may climb up and reach cords that would otherwise be inaccessible.
  • If purchasing a new blind, consider how you and your family will use it and choose the safest option for your needs. Our knowledgeable staff are here to help you make the best choice.

Professional Installation for Maximum Safety

Correct installation is vital to ensure blinds function properly and remain secure. Injuries can occur when blinds detach due to inadequate fixings or unsuitable installation conditions. Our trained staff carefully assess each installation site to determine the most appropriate fittings. If the environment is deemed unsafe, we will provide guidance on necessary adjustments before proceeding with installation.
